From Music to Motors: How One Educator is Elevating STEAM Education with DroneBlocks

How It All Began: A Leap Into Drone Education

“I recently transitioned to a new position as a STEAM Integration Specialist in Santa Barbara,” the educator explains. “I previously worked as a music teacher and technology integrator for the Maine Department of Education. When I began my new role, I was choosing resources to bring into our STEAM programs. A colleague of mine—who was incredibly passionate about DroneBlocks—was a big influence. She was even working on getting a grant for an LED drone light show kit.”

“We offered the drones as an elective to middle school students this year,” the teacher shares. “Nine students signed up, most of them already working toward a coding and computer science certification. They had some experience, but drones added a whole new level of excitement.”

What truly sparked student engagement was the opportunity to engineer real-world drone missions. Instead of just coding on a screen, students used DroneBlocks to fly drones through hoops, build obstacle courses, and iterate on physical design challenges.

“They had the most fun building their own flight challenges. I had purchased some hoops, but they ended up finding PVC piping that wasn’t being used and started engineering their own targets. Watching them collaborate, problem-solve, and debate the best designs was incredible.”


STEAM in Action: Teaching More Than Just Code

One of the most powerful aspects of DroneBlocks is its ability to make abstract STEM concepts tangible. Drones naturally bring together Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

“Our class wasn’t integrated with a core subject, but I could clearly see how this could be tied into math and science,” the teacher says. “Students were calculating distances, adjusting for airflow, talking about velocity and gravity—all through the process of planning drone missions.”

As students engineered their targets, they also applied principles of measurement, balance, spatial awareness, and logic. The artistic component came in with the creative design of the challenges and the layout of the flying environments.

“STEAM came alive. It wasn’t just theory—it was happening right in front of them, and they were the creators.”


Overcoming the Challenges of Drone Education

Introducing drones into the classroom can come with a learning curve. But the challenges can be just as educational as the successes.

“Our biggest issues came from the devices and infrastructure,” the teacher explains. “Our school’s student devices were very secure … We relied solely on the DroneBlocks web app …”

Students also had to learn how to troubleshoot hardware issues like propeller balance and sensor interference—skills that may not be glamorous but are essential in drone engineering.

“The kids just wanted to code and fly, but they had to develop patience. Troubleshooting is part of engineering, and this became a great lesson in resilience and critical thinking.”


DroneBlocks Projects That Inspired Real Learning

Among the many creative projects, one challenge stood out: design an obstacle that a Crazyflie drone could fly through without triggering its sensitive altitude sensors.

“The objective was to engineer elevated targets that didn’t interfere with the drone’s sensors,” the teacher explains. “It took real teamwork, problem-solving, and trial-and-error to get it right. They had to measure precisely, choose materials, and think through every detail.”

By combining physical design with software logic, students experienced an authentic engineering process. And the best part? Every student produced a working design.

“There’s nothing more rewarding as a teacher than watching your students succeed through persistence and creativity.”


Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Drone Education in Santa Barbara

With one successful term completed, the STEAM Integration Specialist is already looking to expand the program.

“Now that we’ve gone through one term, we have a great sense of what works and what needs tweaking. I’d love to introduce other types of drones next and eventually get into LED drone light displays.”

For now, the teacher encourages others to take the leap and reach out for support.
