At DroneBlocks, we believe that transformational STEM education starts with exceptional educators. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the powerhouse team behind our new full-year curriculum, Robotics 101: Land. Air. Sea.—a collaboration with InnovatED STEM, a group of veteran educators, researchers, and real-world engineers who are redefining robotics education from the ground up.
In this blog, we’ll take you inside the minds behind the curriculum, explore why this partnership is a perfect match, and show how their combined expertise makes Robotics 101 one of the most advanced and accessible robotics programs available today.
DroneBlocks has always been committed to real-world, hands-on learning. With thousands of classrooms using our drone curriculum and coding platform, we’ve seen firsthand the power of STEM engagement when students are given tools to explore, create, and code.
But we wanted to go deeper.
We wanted a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum that not only used drones, but also incorporated ground and underwater robotics—something that was rigorous, creative, and aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and computer science frameworks. And most importantly, we wanted it to be built by educators who truly understand what works in today’s classrooms.
That’s where InnovatED STEM came in.
These aren’t just educators—they’re field-tested STEM leaders with real-world experience in everything from marine biology and aerospace physics to competitive robotics and software engineering.
STEM Educator • Software Engineer • Drone Specialist
Frederick is a dynamic force in the world of educational technology. With a background in biology, coding, and engineering, he bridges the gap between theory and practice. He teaches AP Computer Science Principles and leads coral reef aquaculture projects, while also serving as an adjunct professor teaching The Physics of Drones. A prolific developer, Frederick has contributed to over 100 iOS apps and built open-source Python demos for Tello drones. His passion: making STEM approachable, immersive, and future-facing.
“Frederick brings an unparalleled energy to drone education. His ability to connect complex concepts with student-driven projects is a huge part of what makes Robotics 101 soar.” —DroneBlocks
Marine Biology Expert • Field Researcher • American Museum of Natural History, Seminars on Science professor
John created the Marine Biology Program at Walt Whitman High School and has over two decades of experience inspiring students through immersive science. From drilling Arctic ice cores to collecting data in the Bering Sea, he’s lived the science he teaches. He believes STEM education must be active, global, and meaningful—a belief that’s deeply woven into the Sea unit of Robotics 101.
“John’s passion for the environment and field science shaped the underwater ROV unit into something authentic, challenging, and incredibly fun for students.” —DroneBlocks
Engineering Educator • VEX Coach • Project Lead the Way Leader
David brings years of experience from both the construction industry and the classroom. As the leader of his school’s engineering and robotics programs, he’s helped students excel in national competitions and implement industry-level skills through Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses. He is also a fierce advocate for STEM integration and hands-on building—skills at the heart of the Land unit in Robotics 101.
“David has an amazing ability to scaffold engineering for students of all skill levels. His influence ensures the land robotics experience is both accessible and technically sound.” —DroneBlocks
Physics Educator • Researcher • Equity Advocate
Dr. Krakehl teaches AP Physics and conducts ongoing research in physics education with a focus on equity, access, and achievement. He’s presented at national conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals, and works closely with NSF-funded initiatives like the Physics of Living Systems Teacher Network. His expertise is crucial in making sure the curriculum is scientifically rigorous and accessible to diverse learners.
“Rob brings both academic credibility and a deep heart for equitable learning. He makes sure that Robotics 101 doesn’t just reach students—it empowers them.” —DroneBlocks
This partnership represents more than just a curriculum—it’s a movement toward real-world STEM learning led by real educators who understand both the classroom and the cutting edge of innovation. Together, DroneBlocks and InnovatED STEM are delivering:
